I completely sympathize about troubles with libtool. However, one aspect
of this I would push for is that "make dist" should just work so that you
can
ship a tarball to the system you want and that tarball should be independent
of autotools. Of course, this would require having an up-to-date autotools
package sitting around somewhere...
