        Ah, as in all things, the answer comes right after you post a 
question.

        _hse_ refers to 'high speed external' crystal. Call it a case of 
sleep dep:

        From the library:

/* Enable external high-speed oscillator 8MHz. */
376  rcc_osc_on(HSE);
377  rcc_wait_for_osc_ready(HSE);

        --> soobviously this code requires an external oscilator.
