I did get it to build by removing -Werror from the Makefiles but I wanted to
make sure that it wasn't supposed to be able to build without doing that.

Ah, yes, that's that combination of (1) gcc giving an incomprehensible
warning about its own headers and (2) the autotools adding the -Werror
option of their own accord.  One workaround is to edit src/Makefile and
remove the "-Werror" from CXXFLAGS; another may be to set the CXXFLAGS
environment variable to something that doesn't have "-Werror" when running
the configure script.
