I did get it to build by removing -Werror from the Makefiles but I wanted to make sure that it wasn't supposed to be able to build without doing that.

One workaround is to edit src/Makefile and remove the "-Werror" from CXXFLAGS; another may be to set the CXXFLAGS environment variable to something that doesn't have "-Werror" when running the configure script.
