I am still puzzled though that having View > Whitespace checked AND Tools > Options > Writer > Formatting Aids > Display Formatting > Non-breaking space and hyphen enabled, no longer shows NBSP characters: you have to also now turn on the display of all formatting aids via Ctrl-F10 as well.
