I'm sorry, but I don't really understand the steps. Maybe the old spellcheck is
so way, way back that I don't have it. I tried with LibreOffice 3.5.0 and there
in the Spelling dialog, pressing Tab after an unknown word has been found moves
the focus from the "Change" button to the "Change All" button. Tabbing onward,
I am only taken to the text input box so the cursor is at the beginning. The
unknown word is not selected.

The current behaviour actually seems more in line with what you are requesting:
instead of the "Change" button, the focus is now at the beginning of the
unknown word in the input box. This means I can use Ctrl+Delete to remove the
word and type the replacement.
