But it adds a huge amount of padding to the longest entry (also, it's not
obvious that the tab width is uniform, but it's not what I'm arguing here).

So, the top is the native control? I like it much better. The reason is that it
is easy to see which tabs we have; and easier to move from one tab to another,
when you search through the tabs, and when trying one, not find what you're
after.
