Considering the purpose of Writer, I think a serif typeface is an appropriate, or at least a sensible, default. I don't agree that changing the default font alone would make documents look more modern. The overall impression of a document depends primarily on its formatting and design, not on a single font. Whether it is printed or read on a screen doesn't change this. When used appropriately, both serif and sans-serif can produce readable, well-designed documents. Japanese typography also illustrates why this issue should not be considered only from the perspective of Western scripts. Serif (Mincho) is generally used for body text, while sans-serif (Gothic) is used for headings and emphasis. In addition, numerals and the Latin alphabet follow the Western font settings.
