To summarize the pro arguments: serif fonts look outdated, probably because Microsoft introduced Sans Serif a while ago (which is not necessarily a good example). But it depends heavily on the use case what font makes sense. And since the customization is simple (either per Tools > Options > Writer > Basic Fonts or per template), we decided to not change the default.
