@ady - I don't understand why this is the case.  Can you provide more detail?

1. Shrink-to-fit is not documented to only work down to 10pt, and I myself have
often seen extremely tiny shrunken text in such cells (probably less than 2
pt).

2. The available width is 7.5 inches (8.5" page width - 0.5 L & R margins). 
The columns have widths of 4" and 0.5".  Even the phantom column, with default
width, is 0.89".  These add up to 4.5 or 5.39" depending on whether you accept
that column C is needed at all.   This is much less than the 7.5" available
space, so what triggers the extra page?
