While using the os/DE filter selection (and overriding default docshell 'Open' launch) would be even more obscure than current File -> Templates -> 'Edit' of a template selection, or the graphical UI to 'Manage Templates'. The GUI is already functional, but users miss that they must curate their own templates (the core delivered project templates residing at their build/installation folders are read-only). Users (or admins) must copy the ODF Zip archive into the user's own Template directory as found on the Tools -> Options -> Paths panel. The GUI then allows them editing of the templates. Guess some UI based "open template for editing" widget might be feasible for integration onto the os/DE file manager(s), or LibreOffice's own Open/Save dialogs (Tools -> Options -> General).
