Bug ID: 173894
Summary: Calc: Pressing 'Home' key stops at frozen column
boundary on Linux (GTK3/KF5), unlike Windows/Excel
which goes to column A
Product: LibreOffice
Version: 26.2.6.3 release
Hardware: All
OS: Linux (All)
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: normal
Priority: medium
Component: Calc
Assignee: [email protected]
Reporter: [email protected]
Description:
In LibreOffice Calc on Linux, when Rows and Columns are frozen, pressing the
'Home' key from a cell located to the right of the freeze line moves the cell
cursor to the leftmost column of the active pane (the column immediately to the
right of the freeze line). It fails to jump across the freeze boundary to
column A.
Conversely, on Windows (and in Microsoft Excel), pressing 'Home' under the
exact same conditions correctly bypasses the freeze boundary and jumps straight
to Column A. This cross-platform inconsistency impairs the navigation workflow
on Linux.
Steps to Reproduce:
1. Open a new spreadsheet in LibreOffice Calc on Linux.
2. Select column C and freeze panes (View > Freeze Rows and Columns). Columns A
and B are now frozen.
3. Move the cell cursor to any cell further to the right (e.g., cell E5).
4. Press the Home key on your keyboard.
Actual Results:
The cell cursor moves to cell C5 (stopping at the freeze boundary line).
Expected Results:
The cell cursor should move across the freeze boundary to cell A5 (the first
column of the sheet), maintaining consistency with the Windows version and
industry-standard spreadsheet behavior (Excel).
Reproducible: Always
User Profile Reset: No
Additional Info:
Older versions of LibreOffice Calc on Linux used to jump straight to Column A
when 'Home' was pressed. This issue appears to be a navigation or
event-handling inconsistency specific to Linux VCL backends (such as GTK3, KF5,
or Wayland setups) where the split window boundaries are treated as rigid hard
stops for the active pane.
Suggested Solution / Feature Request:
To resolve this cross-platform inconsistency and accommodate different user
workflows, it is highly recommended to introduce a new configuration option
under the settings menu:
Path: Tools > Options > LibreOffice Calc > General (or under Navigation)
Proposed Setting: A dropdown menu or checkbox for "Home key behavior in frozen
panes" with the following options:
1. Jump to Column A (Global Sheet Behavior): Pressing 'Home' will always bypass
the freeze line and move the cell cursor to column A of the current row
(matching MS Excel and LibreOffice Windows behavior).
2. Stop at Freeze Line (Active Pane Behavior): Pressing 'Home' will restrict
the cell cursor within the active pane, moving it only to the first unlocked
column next to the freeze boundary (the current Linux behavior).
Adding this user-configurable option will provide maximum flexibility, ensuring
that users shifting between Windows and Linux environments can maintain a
consistent spreadsheet navigation experience without breaking existing code
logic for either VCL backend.
