IIANM the perceived slowness results from need for document view port movement, *not from the selection* method. So, zoom to show multiple pages, or place view mode into 'multiple-page' a.ka. 'columns' view, and do a mouse (or trackpad) selection when no change to view port is involved. Selection speed is what I'd expect.
