Correct. While the MD4C engine used can be configured with the build flag
'MD_FLAG_LATEXMATHSPANS' that supports in-line LaTex '$' and block '$$' syntax,
devs saw no purpose as the parsed LaTex would have no meaning to LibreOffice,
and otherwise would need further heavier weight conversion to MathML.

LibreOffice at its core is an Oasis "Open Document Format (ODF) for Office
Applications" based environment, its standard calls out the W3C MathML for
formula. The UI for the Math module uses legacy StarMath notation syntax for
formula entry, but native MathML is recorded into ODF documents, with StarMath
as annotation. XML holding MathML will be filter imported into the sm Math
module, and receive StarMath syntax conversion. Spans of MathML can also be
pasted from system clipboard.

And TeX typeset via LaTeX is not natively parsed by LibreOffice. Instead, by
extension (TexMaths [1][2]) LaTeX can be rendered into ODF compliant SVG vector
graphic or PNG bitmap (from what ever flavor of TeX rendering apps on your os
support).

Correct to say TexMaths extension supplements the LibreOffice UI with
conversion and insertion from LaTeX to SVG, rather than using MathML.

We have a long standing requests for enhancement to the Math module UI for
TeX/LaTeX remain (bug 96208) or earlier OOo era (
https://bz.apache.org/ooo/show_bug.cgi?id=2864 ) but for now native support of
LaTeX formula input is not feasible in general, and for certain not in a
CommonMark syntax markdown.

IMHO => NAB and as enhancement to support => WF
