--- Comment #4 from t...@tim-passingham.co.uk ---
Let me try to be 100% clear.

I enter a character when using Mysql(Native) and it works.

I change to Mysql(JDBC) and change nothing else at all. I enter a character
and it shows correctly until I save the record, when it changes to a ?

I cannot see how what font I use, or how I enter data, has anything to do it.

However, I'll try to answer your specific questions.

I normally copy the character from an odt that contains it. I have tried using
'special character' method, and changing to deja vu sans, to no beneficial
effect.

I tried entering the data straight into the table in the odb. Before I save the
row it is OK. Once I save it the character is still replaced by a ?

Any data already stored (by using Mysql(Native)) always displays correctly
whatever connection I use.

It has to be the jdbc for data entry. My libmysql-java is 5.1.16-2.
