Agree. That's the solution I prefer too, but it has been rejected by the design
team.

Update on this: It seems that the current plan is to not retain the current
expert config workaround I mentioned in my previous comment. Have no idea
whether there will be a different workaround at some point.

Please re-read the design minutes I linked to. There will be a clear indication
*on* the save button if the document is modified.
