But are the dot files really necessary? I thought the real problem was that the
doc files are not interpreted correctly

Well, the standard version of office at my workplace is Office 2007
It could surely be helpful to split the bug report in various bug reports, one
for each problem, and if you tell me how you prefer, I will do it.
I will already be very happy if Writer will be able to open the doc files
correctly!
