It was NOT a LibreOffice problem, but a logical error in my CUPS configuration. Under <Limit SendDocument ...>, there was an entry "AuthType Default", and I found in the Cups admin manual that "Default" means "none". BUT: in another line of my cupsd.conf, I found "DefaultAuthType Basic", so "Default" is not the same as "default". Changing "AuthType" to "None" solved the problem ... sorry for all that!
