I have locally reverted the change (plus two related) and I can confirm that
doing so noticeably improves the performance in this case. I don't know what
other positive or negative effects it may have.
Since doing the revert was non-trivial, I have posted it at
https://gerrit.libreoffice.org/c/core/+/110588 , in case reverting is the
decision (but I don't want to be the one making it).
