Possibly the low-level backends really are the best place to cache generated
bitmaps, maybe with a little cooperation across the API, e.g. how we cache
glyph renders for text.
The low-level backends are the place that finally has all the relevant
information available.
I'm fairly sure Caolan implemented a cache for rendering pictures in writer, so
I'm surprised another one (from Armin) was even necessary.
