I have re-read this several times, without being able to form a clear or stable
meaning, but from what I understand, I believe it is not accurate.

Further and previous experiments (including using several different lists and
non-list paragraphs) lead me to believe:

1. Select any paragraphs you want, anywhere in the document, list or no list.
2. Place the cursor anywhere you want (as long as it is in or after a list)
3. Format > Lists > Continue Previous Numbering

Result: The list that immediately precedes the cursor (or where the cursor is
located) will have its numbering/formatting applied to the selected paragraphs.
(with a caveat for some corner cases, where Continue Previous Numbering is not
active, such as illustrated in comment 33)

This might make the documentation very easy.

1. Select paragraphs to be added to a list.
2. Place cursor in the list.
3. "Add to List"

Result: Selected paragraphs get the labelling and formatting of the list.

(to be completely accurate, step 2 should be "in the list, or after the list,
but before the next list".)
