Ok, now I get it. Alt+5 on the NumPad could insert some ASCII character, but it
is also the shortcut for the Functions pane of the Sidebar (just like 1 to 4
for the other panes). I see that this can be distracting.

For now, you could use another way: type the hexadecimal code for the character
and press Alt+X. For ° it would be B0. You can discover the codes from Insert -
Special Character.

But bug 156443 says that Alt+NumPad is not really supported yet. Let's alert UX
team.
