hi eiren -
i have a 4.2GB hard drive that also slows to a crawl at exactly 85% scanned.
i walked away the first time and let it finish so i was sure there wasn't a
lockup at the 85% point. after confirming it would run to completion, i
made a practice of clicking on the 'exit' button and bailing out early. (my
machine it 50ct/win95/fat 32/several hd partitions)
the partition being scanned is roughly 1.5GB. much of my hd is used for a
linux OS. so i don't think there's any thing 'magic' about the number 4GB.
perhaps there's something significant about 85%....but i am at a loss to
understand it.
just wanted you to know that your problem is not unique to you. at least
one other person sees the same problem.

I just put a new 6GB Toshiba drive (MK6412MAT) in my L50 (BIOS 6.50). 4GB
FAT32 partition followed by a 2GB FAT16 partition. When checking drive C
for errors, Scandisk gets to 85% of the 4GB partition and then slows to a
crawl. Anyone else experienced this? While it's crawling the HD busy light
barely moves. It may go a minute or more without registering any activity.
It even did this (still at 85%) when I had a 6GB FAT32 partition on this
drive.
Any clues?
