This worked! Thanks VERY much David!
(Now who would think that autodetect would choose degraded performance?)
Other issue:

Nope, not the enhanced port replicator. The right name is the IO adapter
(sorry) - Model CABO356A
If you look directly at the left side of the adapter, in the surface
facing you(me!) is a slot about 7mm by 3 mm. Looking into the slot is a
metal tag. There is an icon (for want of a better word) immediately
above the slot: on the left is what looks like the top of a penlight
cell, linked to the outline of a rectangle, linked to a capital E (I
said I had good eyesight!) Unless I find out what it is I'm sometime
going to succumb to the temptation to open the case and look, and I know
I'll be sorry! So if anyone can help?
Thank you very much for the urls - now I have the manual and an
annotated parts list for the IO adapter, viewed from the RIGHT front! -
of course no sign of a slot!
