In fact, it's easy, at least under Win95/98. Bus/interface doesn't really matter 
(well, not sure about parallel, serial is way too slow) , but it takes a CD-ROM drive 
capable of a very good rip (digital audio extraction).

I have never managed to get native Win98 digital transfer enabled without USB 
sound-box, thus my way was to replace CDFS.vxd with this:

I want to warn you once again - it doesn't work with every drive. Personally tested 
this on my Lib1000SS with Panasonic KXL-RW10AN portable burner. Works.
