The jack shell contacting the tip on insertion can have other problems.
You momentarily connect + to the lib's ground. This is not a problem, as 
long as there are no other cables connected, and nothing connected to ground.

If there ever is such a connection, then as you insert the plug, the tip 
will  create a short, and the results... well. Anything from a spark to fire.

Also, the tip may cause a short between the shell and tip contacts on the 
jack during insertion. All plugs are not created equal in this respect.

In ham circles, the phono plug is NEVER used for power, for these reasons.

Coaxial plugs are normal, and anderson powerpoles are widely accepted as a 
standard. See the OCRACES home page for the setup standard.

All my 12V gear is now powerpoled, but the Lib isn't strictly a 12V device, 
so I haven't powerpoled it.

A tip from a former fireman. If you ever suspect fire in your motor home, 
BAIL OUT NOW.  Those things burn unbelievably fast.
