  Start from the basics. Verify the HD is okay.

  In DOS, Run a virus checker to make sure there aren't any.
  Uuse Simmtester.com DocMemory to verify the RAM is okay.
  Run scandisk thorough overnight or over a couple hours to verify the HD is
okay.

  The machine should not hang and should complete these w/o any problems. If
not, you can stop there and figure out what to do.

  Otherwise, Windows is simply Windows.
  For the depressing results, see Microsoft's own reliability studies:

http://www.microsoft.com/NTWorkstation/overview/Reliability/RelStudy.asp

http://www.microsoft.com/WINDOWS2000/guide/professional/solutions/overview/reliable/default.asp#muchmore

  While they suggest 30% of Win95/98 users experience some sorta crash twice or
more each month, they really didn't say how many experienced at least one a
month or more -- my feeling is that it's probably 40-60% of users that do.

  (Oh, well, back to DOS, which never bothered to crash at all...)

  d =)
