On at least the 50 and 70 (dunno about the 100 +, I don't have one to play
with) the maximum disk size the bios will report is 8.4GB. If you want
something bigger than that, you have to put some software in that will
intercept calls to the bios and return the real size of the disk.
If you have an OS that doesn't use the bios for disk access (e.g. W2K or
Linux) then they can talk to the disk directly and get the information they
need.
There's one provisio: for Linux at least, it's possible to set up a disk
partition table that the bios won't like on the next boot...most times it
will still boot but you can find odd things, like fdisk (which reads half
the info from the disk ad half from the bios) being unable to clear a
partition. However, in all cases, I've found the IBM disk driver able to
clear the drive - you just might need to clear the driver afterwards.
