I am also considering win98 so I can do gps > In the past I've posted my partition table but I can't find it on a quick search...but: o There's no problem doing a dual boot o Unless there's an absolutely must-have app on M8.1, don't. Use M7.1 - it's between three and six times faster at loading to login, login to window manager, and window manager to common apps. o M7.1 will install from the hard disc (in text mode) on a 50 (though not a 70 for some reason) provided that there's 32M of memory installed. However, it won't allow you to do the reiserfs file system which imho is essential for any portable system. Installing from disk on a desktop machine is the easiest solution, make sure you install the SVGA library for xwindows and *don't* test the video mode you set up - chips and technology CT65550. o Windows has to be the first partition in a dual boot system o You need around forty meg either side of cylinder 1023 for the partition (well probably only one side, but what the hell, you've 20g to play with :) o Recommended partitions: (do this from a linux fdisk, and you *may* have to do it again for the windows partition in windows) 1 0-1013 windows fat32 (7.9G) 2 1014-1016 ext2 /boot (30M) 3 1017-1029 unused - hibernation 4 to suit you - I use 256M for swap,2G for /, 2G for /usr, and the rest for /home everything above cylinder 1029 (except the swap) is reiserfs. If you want the actual fdisk dump, I'll post it here. o For mpeg on an unclocked 50 you may have problems. Sonique works in the minimum display mode under windows, mpg123 works fine in linux but it's text mode. alsaplayer may work but it will be touch and go. o Set the sound in linux as the WSS player. You may have to play with the sound settings in the bios.
