However, irrespective of the connection rate, afaik, the 16-bit interface of the lib pcmcia slot is saturated at around 4mbs. So it doesn't matter how fat a pipe you have if you can't get the data off the card and it keeps on having to send 'whoa boy' signals back... You'll probably find that MS Netbuei (the drive sharing etc) is faster than a tcp/ip connection - there's less overhead.
