Subject: Possible BIOS problems on 70CT

In the process of setting up networking on this 70CT and my old 50CT, I
discovered something very interesting about the problem I've been having
with this Xircom combo modem powering down the system during boot:

I took the 6.4GB HDD that I was having the Xircom problems with, and put it
into my 50CT when I put this 20GB HDD in the 70CT. Then I inserted the
Xircom card, booted the 50CT, and lo and behold... it booted FINE without
powering the system down like it does in the 70CT!

My old 750MB HDD didn't have any problems booting with the Xircom drivers
set up and the card inserted into the 50CT either. But back when I
experimented with setting up the Xircom on the 50CT and found no problems, I
assumed that this only pointed to my old installation of W98 on the 6.4GB
HDD on the 70CT being corrupted. I thought all I needed to do would be to
reformat, and reinstall W98.

But having done a fresh installation of W98 now on this 20GB HDD, I've found
that for some reason, the Toshiba power saving driver (hairy bulb) conflicts
with the Xircom drivers, and ONLY WHEN THE HDD IS INSTALLED ON THE 70CT!!

Switch any HDD with both Xircom and Toshiba power saving drivers to the
50CT, and the problem vanishes.

Now the only thing I can think of trying at this point is to upgrade the
BIOS on the 70CT from v6.2 to v6.4. But reading the issues with the three
versions:

...I don't see anything addressing driver conflicts.

I'm always a bit hesitant to flash the BIOS (as Raymond is hesitant to use
Partition Magic... something I almost to daily at points). I wish I could
remember what the problem I was reading about where someone had to go back
to BIOS v6.2 to solve a problem. Does anyone remember? Is there no problem
going BACKWARD in flashing the BIOS from a newer version to an older
version? I'd hate to end up with a screwed up BIOS like James's 50CT!

Has anyone had any driver issues with a 70CT where upgrading to BIOS v6.4
solved the problem? Can anyone think of any other things that could cause
this problem on the 70CT and not the 50CT. Sounds a bit like Neil's
problems installing Mandrake on a 70CT.

Thanks folks.

Matt
