Thanks to everyone who replied answering my question. I couldn't get an "enabler" to work so I took another way out & yanked the hard drive from my 70 & put it into one of my desktop machines. a quick reformat into win98 mode and a copy of the win98 cd onto the drive and everything came back to life. the guy in the shop said that the drive itself might be on the way out as every directory was renamed as dir0000x (where x starts at 1 and increments for every real directory there was). so I might be on the look out for a cheap 2� inch drive...
