Whats the "Spanish Inquisition" got to do with anything?!?!

OK I know its a Monty Python quote (which I don't remember) but it'd be good if
someone could explain this one to me ... heh

*sigh* OK I might as well lay my cards on the table before I start berating the
people who will confess to having non-Toshiba laptops in the next few hours ;-)

Warning, this does get long as I've got stuck in rant mode but given that there
IS no useful information in this post anyway, you're welcome to skip it and move
on.

OK?

You're still here? Well you WERE warned! OK here goes ...

Zero'th laptop: Second hand Compaq LTE Lite/25. Bad move. REALLY bad move. Got
me through high school though (and really, I couldn't afford a Toshiba back
then).

First laptop: Compaq Contura somethingorother (486). Company laptop that no-one
was using, had it for a few months. Again really bad move. At least it could run
Linux I guess. The last non-Toshiba laptop I owned (although I've had to deal
with newer Compaq laptops since and they've not been an awful lot better).

Second laptop: Toshiba Tecra 500CDT. My first foray into Toshiba laptops. Really
nice. Really really nice. A lot 'smarter' than the current crop of laptops ... I
could even eject the CD-ROM drive hot without telling the laptop and when I went
to try to access it, it'd behave as if I had just ejected the disk (which makes
sense) as opposed to crashing (which is what most modern laptops do) or giving
me a system error (which is what modern laptops claim they're supposed to do).
Ditto for the floppy disk drive. It was weird though, it'd let me eject it from
its docking station even though it had no battery in it (and since it was a
motorized undock you could probably guess what happened ...) ... pitty it had a
dead internal keyboard (which is why it got given to me as a redirection off the
scrapheap, being a poor first year university student at the time) so whenever I
wanted to use it I'd need to carry around a desktop keyboard. I still use it as
a nice, compact desktop that doesn't need a bulky monitor (the docking station
lets me test hard drives and expansion cards much more conveniently than a
desktop).

Third laptop: Toshiba Portege 3010. Only had it for a few months (company
laptop), would be even nicer than the Tecra if it was free (like the Tecra was)
... nice, light, powerful and, had the Libretto not come along, would have been
the best laptop I'd have had the pleasure of having to use. I'd imagine the 7020
would be the same.

Fourth laptop: Toshiba Satellite 30CDT. Again, company laptop. Not bad, sorta
like a bigger Portege but no magnesium case. Its got a damn strong magnesium
frame though (we're talking a fall off a speeding bike onto bitumen leaving it
missing a good 1-2cm off one corner but the thing still in fine working
condition). My respect for Toshiba laptops grow, tempered only by the fact that
they put WinME on them at this stage ...

Fifth laptop: Second hand Toshiba Libretto 50CT. REALLY nice. Carried it around
with me nearly everywhere. The fact that my everyday coat had a pocket that was
*just* big enough to fit it in was nice. Even went and got a 20 gig hard drive
for it. Pitty it didn't have the RAM upgrade (and I couldn't afford to get one
given the ridiculous prices they go for now). Now belongs to my sister.

Sixth (current) laptop: Second hand Toshiba Libretto 100CT. I thought the L50
was nice, this one was even better. I could rant on but I've just realized I've
spent too much time on this list already and I've got to get some work done but
in short, I *really* love this laptop ... now that I've got provisions for PS/2
keyboard and mouse (and where I work there are ALWAYS spare ones of those lying
round), I use this hallowed piece of electronic wizardry more than ever. And yes
my new coat has pockets big enough to accomodate the extra 1cm or so that
prevented this L100 from fitting into my old coat so now it can always be close
to my heart ;-)

So I guess after wandering round in the Compaq wilderness and being guided by
other Toshiba laptops to the ultimate peak in portable computing that is the
Toshiba Libretto series, I'm a convert. Am I cleansed of my past sins and
therefore able to join in the abuse of those who have turned away from the
light? ;-)
