I've just gone through figuring out formatting CF cards, and it seems that ALL removable disks are formatted Windows as FAT12 by default.

Hmm ... well I managed to get the card to fdisk once in my libby then I formatted in my libby it then walked the physical bytes of the disk using Norton DiskEdit and it quite clearly says FAT16 (and the partition table is gibberish if you read it as FAT12).

My mistake. The feedback I got from the Windows forum on Compuserve said that all removeable media would be formatted as Fat16. So I went ahead and reformatted my CF card, as their info says they have to be formatted as Fat16.

When I looked at the partition info for a FD in DiskEdit, it reported the formatting as Fat12. I haven't been able to get the C&S drivers set up to be able to access the CF card in the PC card adapter in DOS. And the copy of DeskEdit I set up only runs in DOS without Windows booted. So I haven't been able to look at the CF card in DOS yet. I wonder if I install Norton Utlities v4.0, it may have Windows equivilents of the DOS DiskEdit program, and maybe offer the defrag David mentioned.

But I >have< successfully reformatted my CF card in Windows.

How big is your card?

I have a Lexar 16x 16MB CF card that came with the Nikon a couple years back. I also have a 340MB microdrive, but haven't played with formatting it yet.

I don't think DOS by itself will let you format anything bigger than 15 meg as FAT12, I was hoping some 3rd party program might.

The Compuserve Windows forum is free to the public these days if you want to ask there. But I'd think the SM card would have to work with Windows formatting utility just as the CF card does. I'd guess hat's what a lot people who don't know much at all about computers use to reformat SM cards.

I'm using an SM to PCMCIA adapter in my libby. I would use my camera to format them except for some bizzare reason, if the card isn't actually formatted at FAT12 FIRST the camera rejects it and will refuse to format it.

Huh... Now I wonder if Windows DOES in fact format >all< removeable media as Fat12, and not Fat16.
