But, for those wanting the best performance, you can't beat a 5400rpm HD in a
laptop, and it really does make it feel snappier if you start to do a lot with
it.
I've started to do a bit of editing of .wav and .mp3 audio files recently to do things like applying a permanent EQ boost, and editing things like the unreleased stereo version of Procol Harems Whiter Shade of Pale to eliminate the studio chat at the beginning and trim the length back down to the length of the original. Another fun project was inserting Dooley Wilson's full studio version of 'As Time Goes By' into the movie soundtrack version so that his patter with Ingrid Bergman at the begining, and Humphrey Bogart's sudden appearance at the end of the song are included. In the film, Wilson's rendition was cut short there. So having a bit more power to process the files a bit faster would be nice.

All of the specs on 5400rpm HDs however do show that the WATTs of heat
dissipated during use is higher than with 4200rpm HDs, so if you do start to
use the Libretto HD a lot, it'll wind up being a hotter unit overall, and I'm
not certain if the up to 0.5WATT difference would cause serious problems with
the Libretto -- probably not in most cases, but it could if the ambient temp.
is already very hot.
Hmm... This doesnt bode well for installing one in an o/ced L100 here in Florida.

Some of the latest HDs do come with killer 16MB cache, so these are the gems
to focus on - see my website for the latest HD list updated with those HDs.
They'll let you're Libretto run as fast as they can.
Im guessing that the new large 4200RPM HDDs also have these larger caches too, right? Maybe thats the way I ought to go. Id really like to o/c this L100 and install XP. But if a 5400RPM HDD will force me to keep bags of Neils frozen peas in the freezer, I might reconsider.

Matt
