See Libretto Mailing List Archvies on my site for prior posts on this
subject.

I'm running the Billington CompactFlash GPS card converted to PCMCIA with a
$10 CF to PCMCIA adapter, running Microsoft MapPoint. Pretty much anywhere I
go, it'll show me where I am on the map. Add Advanced GPS (AGPS) program to
Mappoint or Streets & Trips, and you can get second by second updates (rather
than Mappoints default, unchangeable 15 second map location updates),
direction, speed, heading, etc. A very nice program, AGPS! Pretty much works
when I'm even pacing back and forth in the back yard!!

With the above, pretty much can drive anywhere here in Southern California
and get GPS just like you would with an in-dash car GPS setup. Nicer, too
because I can select which MP3s I'd like played, and with a SprintPCS or
Verizon wireless internet PCMCIA card, you can even go online anytime you'd
like anywhere these cellphone providers have coverage.

The latest handheld GPS devices tend to startup quicker due to newer GPS
chipsets. eg. the Billington can take a few minutes to startup and acquire
enough satellites to work. One of the recent electronics magazines talked
about how GPS chipsets were out that could acquire and lock them in under 10
seconds flat.

So, that would be one benefit of going handheld vs. CompactFlash.

The Billington I bought on ebay.com did come with some mapping/GPS software
for the WinCE palmtops, but I don't have one so can't tell you how good that
was. But you should be able to have it work quite nicely.

Seach www.yahoo.com a bit for lots of GPS websites covering equipment and
software.

In the end, I'm happy. The Libretto 110 can cover me for a 3 hour drive GPS
on all the way, so that's all I need for now. It would be nice to find a
in-car Libretto holder with flexible neck so I can have it positioned just at
my fingertips in my car, but I haven't yet seen a good, lightweight, compact
laptop holder that's downsized for the Libretto.

That way, I could have the screen up by the radio control eye level rather
than on my lap or beside me in the car.

A WinCE/handheld GPS would be easier mounted in-car.
