On the road the Extended Port replicator is no option due to the required external power.
The speed of the interface is no real issue I think because it is the Flash memory itself that is slow.
I'm not sure about that. CF media does come in 8x, 16x, and other speeds. But there's a definate difference between transfer rates between using a USB.1.1 interface, and using a PCMCIA interface in my Librettos.
I timed transferring 328MB of MP3s from my IBM 340MB Microdrive CF 'card' to my L100 o/ced to 266, and got these results:
PCMCIA: 6.27 minutes USB: 7.05 minutes.
The specific device used to transfer data via USB also can determine the transfer rate. That same 328MB of MP3s would have taken up to 30 minutes to transfer using the USB interface cord for my MP3 player to the L100, as its firmware is not well written.
Also, the CF or SM PCMCIA adapter can be kept inserted in the L100 or L110 so there's nothing else to tote along separately as would be the case with a USB adapter on a wire. A USB card the SM/CF memory could be inserted into would be convenient, but the slightly transfer times I see with the PCMCIA adapter would make it my choice for transferring data.
It's funny too... It seems the difference between transfer rates on my L100 and my L70 are not that different. I'm kind of curious to know why the L100 o/ced to 266 doesn't achieve significantly faster transfers than the stock L70. Must have something to do with bus speeds?
Matt
What I read about the PCMCIA-SD adapter is you have to take out the adapter,
place the SD card and put it back in the PCMCIA slot again, every time again.
For a CF adapter this seems to be different.
The most flexible solution seems to be a PCMCIA USB card and a separate USB-SDcard adapter(SanDisk cruser)
Are there PCMCIA-USB adapters that completely fit INSIDE a PCMCIA type II slot?
The ones I saw so far stick out 1 or 2 cm.
