Cards that are type II but are a full type III height so they can have inbuilt jacks are nice (I've got a Xircom Realport 56 modem myself) but I found that they tend to cause the laptop to overheat a *lot* faster than a single type II height device (assuming the other slot isn't occupied) ... I have a habit of populating the lower slot first so that the processor, which is right above where the PCMCIA slot is, has at least a little bit of circulation. If I have to have 2 cards in, I put the hottest one (generally the network card) on the bottom and the cooler one (generally a cardreader) in the top one.
Something to think about for those of us who live in slightly hotter climates and/or have overclocked ...

Realistically, no. Just buy whatever works.
