However, due to design limitations of the card itself, and perhaps the
Libretto, you may not ever be able to get close to full 100Mbit/sec
(13Mbyte/sec) transfer rates other Fast Ethernet. (For sure, I've never
encountered one website that could push data that fast to my Libretto or other
PCs. You may only get top speed with PC-to-PC connections on a small local
workgroup or direct connection.)

That said, I simply don't encounter a difference in real life using a
16-bit vs. 32-bit Ethernet card for Internet usage.

Thanks for the run down on the theoretcal/realistic transfer rates David. I decided to go ahead and get a 16bit ethernet card to link my L70 and L100, so that it could be used in each Libby with my Xircom combo modem, as the slower of the two would determine the transfer rate.

Though now I'm rethinking things. I've only set up very basic networking for a few home systems in the past, and admit I don't really know much about it. But would it be possible to use my old Xircom 16bit combo modem in my L70 to connect to the Internet via dailup, and be able to access the net via my L100 networked to the L70 via Win98SE networking?

I just networked the two via the Xicom and the 16bit Linksys card I got, installed Norton Personal Firewall, and went online. But there must be a few more things to set if it's possible to access the net via the system without the modem and dialup connection.

If it is possible to get that going, I just might return the 16bit card, and exchange it for the 32bit model (same price). That way the L100 ought to achieve a bit faster transfers when connected to a newer desktop system with the 32bit card over the 16bit one.

Matt
