From: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
BUT, I haven't installed the Tosh sound driver. The Yamaha driver was either installed by W98se or by the L100ctrl utilities file.
I think that's what's going on with my L100 Lee. Windows may be ignoring the folder where I've extracted the drivers, and is going ahead and installing the ones from the W98SE installation files on the HDD. I don't think I had to install them myself when I 1st loaded W98SE.
It funny though... going into the properties for the sound drivers in in Device Manage, and looking at the 'Drive file details', I see this same list of files that are in the zip archive from Toshiba:
C:\Windows\System\Vopl3sa.vxd - 5/13/98 C:\Windows\System\Vsgm.vxd - 10/30/97 C:\Windows\System\Vymixd.vxd - 5/7/97 C:\Windows\System\Cpl32apl.cpl - 3/27/98 C:\Windows\System\Opl3sa.drv - 3/13/98 C:\Windows\System\Help\Opl3sacf.hlp - 3/16/98
And a MS file not from Toshiba:
C:\Windows\System\Mmdevldr.vxd - 4/23/99
I don't know why Windows balks when I navigate to the extracted driver files from Toshiba.
Running the Opl3sacf.hlp help file is interesting. I don't have any idea what it's referring to, or where the settings it describes can be accessed. They don't seem to be in 'Contol Panel > Multimedia", or on the 'Options' menu for the 'Volume Control' that sits in the system tray.

I also got just one device listed there, but it's called "YAMAHA OPL3-SAx WDM driver".
Hi Philip.
I'm guessing that you've got Windows 98 installed, not 98SE. I recall seeing that "YAMAHA OPL3-SAx WDM driver' entry in DM myself, but it's been a while, and must have been in one of my W98 installations.

Again, same here. But in the Control Panel, under Multimedia, I see all devices (except joystick) listed.
The things in my Control Panel related to the 'Sound, video & game contollers' are:
* 'Game Controllers' where it looks like I just use default Windows settings.
* 'Multimedia' where I can set the preferences for OPL3-SA playback and recording as a 'preferred device'.
* 'Sounds' which are all those annoying system sounds I've turned off.
* 'OPL3-SAx Configuration'
Oh! The 'OPL3-SAx Configuration' is what the help file I mentioned above refers to. Except that 'ZV port' in help doesn't exist in my OPL3-SAx Configuration panel, nor 'MIC L/R Mute' for 'Mic volume setting'. Oddly, there's no icon to access that help file on the setting window.
I don't like the looks of that '3D Enhanced Ymersion' setting. I hope at the default setting that it's disabled.
IIRC I did roughly the same, but rather during installation of Win98 itself (I installed it on a logical partition, using the Windows\Options\Cabs\... tree and setup.exe therein, I also copied sound/floppy/video drivers there). File version.txt says "Yamaha OPL3-SA Windows 95/98 Sound driver v.4.05.2338"; it's from L110snd9.exe (not l100snd8.exe).
You know, following Lee's lead in using L110 drivers instead of L100 drivers, I decided to give the drivers in L110snd9.exe a try. But except for one file (forget which now) in the L100 set that wasn't in the L110 set, the files were identical if I recall correctly. And I didn't notice any improvement on Winamp playback stuttering that's what the purpose of all this has been.
You might try other drivers: - p301snd9.exe (probably for Portege) - s253snd9_OPLSA3x.exe (ditto?) I d/led those two a while ago from the Toshiba site just out of curiosity, both seemed to work but I did not test all of them very thoroughly.
Okay... Thanks for the tip Phillip. If I get brave enough, I'll see if I can find those Portege drivers and take them out for a test drive. From what I've send ad read at this point, it doesn't seem I'm going to find any drivers that are going to fix this Winamp problem.
I >am< having some success as I write with changing Winamp's priority class to 'high'. Though it's specifically written below the setting that 'high' is not recommended, I've not had the Winamp complain in the past 1/2 hour or so. If it stays stable for a long enough period, maybe that will do the job. Though I'm still wondering why Raymond didn't seem to have the problem on his unclocked L100.
Matt
