The general findings supports the use of a >8GB HD in a Libretto with any OS w/o EZ-Drive is okay as long as you've partitioned it with a program or OS that handles the full/actual size of the HD, one that bypasses the BIOS for determining the size of the HD -- however, it hasn't been tested extensively, so you may encounter problems.... --- That said, you can use Windows 2K/XP/Linux to do this, or if you want, partition the HD in a PC desktop first, then drop it into the Libretto, etc. Normal DOS fdisk can't see beyond the 8GB limit due to its dependency upon what the BIOS reports (the Libretto BIOS can't do it properly). If you do get it partitioned, the findings by others say you should have no problems accessing the drive from any OS (Windows 98-XP, Linux -- don't know about DOS...) w/o any problems. ---- That said, I haven't tested this myself, nor has anyone extensively tested it with the variety of OSs out there, but at least those who have installed Windows 2k/XP/Linux w/o ez-Drive have said that they've partitioned and are running those OSs w/o problems (This is normal -- they access the HD size directly, bypassing the BIOS -- these OSs should always work fine.). For the older OSs, Windows 95/98/DOS, the idea is that they should be able to access larger HDs after the HD is partitioned, but very few people who are running such OSs have tested such a setup w/o EZ-Drive extensively to make sure there's no data loss. Also, OSs such as DOS & Windows 95 and 98 all have HD size limitations in them. Some of these limitations can be bypassed, however, not all HD sizes can be supported even after patch updates -- see www.microsoft.com -> support for these. They simply were not designed to handle HDs much larger than 8GB properly. --- That said, I have encountered no problems at all running EZ-Drive and two primary partition installs of Windows 98SE on my L110 with a 20GB Hitachi for the past several years. Everything works fine, never had a problem, even saves and restores using Symantec Ghost backups just fine. And, most HD makers recommend you use it if their HD setup program detects a problem with a BIOS (here, the Libretto does..). So, totally up to you to try and test. Can't guarentee anything w/o EZ-Drive with OSs other than W2K/XP/Linux. ===== adorable toshiba libretto The latest news and information for the Toshiba Libretto owner. http://www.silverace.com/libretto/ __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!?
