Subject: Re: [LIB] EZ-Drive, yes or no revisited...

Hey David... Thanks for the rundown on this. A few points:

From: David Chien <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

Normal DOS fdisk can't see beyond the 8GB limit due to its dependency upon what
the BIOS reports (the Libretto BIOS can't do it properly).

Actually, I've found that once a >8GB HDD is partitioned with other software, Fdisk can indeed >see<, or report the size of partitions over the 8GB boundry. At least it can when an FAT32 extended partition staddles the 8GB boundry with a few logical drives on it. That's the only test I was able to do with Fdisk in this regard. Not sure >why< Fdisk sees it, or if it could actually create a partition >8gb, but I tend to doubt it.

That said, I have encountered no problems at all running EZ-Drive and two
primary partition installs of Windows 98SE on my L110 with a 20GB Hitachi for
the past several years. Everything works fine, never had a problem, even saves
and restores using Symantec Ghost backups just fine. And, most HD makers
recommend you use it if their HD setup program detects a problem with a BIOS
(here, the Libretto does..).

Well... as far as problems with it, I'm still not sure just what caused my 20GB HDD w/EZ-Drive to be corrupted when Ghost aborted mid restore process with errors, leaving the system blown to pieces. Then there's the confusion of which Ghost switch to run with EZ-Drive installed to deal with Int13 Extensions:

-fnx - Disables extended INT13 support for hard disk operations.
^ - The one you recommended David
-ffx - Prefers the use of Extended Interrupt 13h disk access for hard disk operations.
^ - The one Raymond recommeded
-fni - Disables direct IDE access support for IDE hard disk operations.
- ^ - The one Symantec recommends here:

http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/ghost.nsf/docid/1999012915211725?Open&src=w

"When using Ghost to clone a drive that uses a drive manager or overlay, use the -FNI switch to ensure that Ghost properly detects the geometry of the drive."

Anyone want to put their vote in on which works for them?

All I know there is I ran Ghost within Windows thinking it would... well... not thinking things through very well, and not using >any< switch as I have done successfully in the past within Windows. But when Ghost aborted with errors, the system wouldn't boot anymore, and I found out later that the file system on the C: primary drive was blown to pieces. I was only abloe to recover a few folders.

So I think I'll be leaving EZ-Drive out of the picture on my Librettos in the future if I'm going to continue Ghosting drives here and there. Just one less factor to have to figure on running file system related utilities, or figure out when they go south.

Matt
