Subject: Drive overlay warning for partitioning and imaging

I just discovered that Partition Magic doesn't report partition data correctly on my 20GB HDD without EZ-Drive installed. This because I have an extended partition that spans the 8GB hibernation boundry. Ghost seems to see everything correctly with or without EZ-Drive, but more on that later.

Without EZ-Drive installed, PM v8 doesn't even load in DOS. PM v5 does, but its colored bar GUI extends out the right edge of the screen.

Without EZ-Drive installed, PM from Windows reports all partitions correctly, but isn't aware of free space at the end of the drive. Here's what it reports:

C:   Fat32          2549GB   Primary
(*)  extended       12150GB  Primary
D:   Fat32          5420GB   Logical
*    Fat32          101MB    Logical (Hibernation)
E:   Fat32          4369GB   Logical

With EZ-Drive installed, PM in Windows reports the free space at the end of the drive:

C:   Fat32          2549GB   Primary
(*)  extended       12150GB  Primary
D:   Fat32          5420GB   Logical
*    Fat32          101MB    Logical (Hibernation for 100CT)
E:   Fat32          6628GB   Logical
*    unallocated    4369GB

PM requires EZ-Drive to be installed on a >8gb HDD to work correctly in DOS booted from HDD or FDD, as well as when booted into Windows. So I don't think I'd want to do any partitioning without EZ-Drive drive overlay loaded.

For Ghost without EZ-Drive installed, I tested Symantec's recommendation of running the -fni switch to disable direct IDE support for HDD operations. I experimented just the setup process of imaging a partition, but when I selected the 20GB HDD to create an image for, I got this error message:

 "Warning: Space in partitions exceeds total disk size.
  Do you wish to proceed?"

Ghost run without any switches at all doesn't get an error message, and doesn't seem to have problems seeing the partitions correctly. And that goes for the HDD both >with< and >without< EZ-Drive installed. But I haven't done any tests using Ghost without EZ-Drive. Frankly, I'm wary of even using Ghost at all after my last disastrous experience with it. I guess I'll be sticking with one or two proven methods that Lee and David have reported.

Anyone know what the default commands for Ghost are when run from the command line? Lee and David... do you guys run any switches when booting Ghost?

So I guess I'm flopping back to the other side of the fence on this issue, and will run >8GB HDDs in my Libbys >with< EZ-Drive.

David or Philip, or both may want to put a little blurb on their websites about this relationship between the Libretto BIOS, partitioning, imaging, and drive overlay.

Matt
