Is there any easy way to fix this? Or should I simply reinstall Win XP from scratch? I'm sort of loath to do the latter as I worry the Win XP activation will give me trouble - maybe it'll think I'm trying to use this copy of Win XP on a second computer. I cannot restore to an earlier point as I'd turned that feature off to save memory.

If the only problem is the shortcuts on the Start menu... it's a pretty simple task to create new ones manually if you want to take the time. It's just a matter of setting up folders and putting program shortcuts in them in your 'x:\Documents and Settings\(user name)\Start Menu' folder. Maybe also the 'x:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu' folder.

You don't have to make them all at the same time. Maybe just do a few of the most used ones at a time, and leave the others until you're redy to use them. That's pretty much the process I go through when installing programs whenever I reformat a drive.
