It _is_ being used internally.

I think that unless someone speaks up for the benefit of providing this 
function in the API we'll just leave it as-is and add a stronger DEPRECATED 
wording in the man page for it. This saves us an soname bump.

I'll start a new document or list somewhere for "stuff to do at next soname 
bump" and I'll add the removal of this function to that list.
