Thank you, Fridrich. That was exactly what this beginner needed to know. I just tried building the latest libwpd and succeeded. I did not yet use the additional instructions for compiling under OS X, because I wanted to see if I could build it at all, but will do this later. Thank you for the clear and complete instructions!
