I don't get this error and others don't seem to have this problem as well. Your error message is about the exact automake version that you did use before your upgrade to 1.7. please make sure that you didn't mess up your system with 2 mixed automake versions. it might help to completely remove both automake versions (manually check the usual dirs for remaining files from old automake versions) and install only the new one.
