I can reproduce it. Note that GUB uses msgfmt from gettext-tools 0.15.
Ubuntu 10.04 has gettext 0.17, so it's possible that the po files that were
created are only valid for gettext > version X.
This is a Critical regression between the 2.15.39 release and current git
master ce1d0e01ebe3cec6f50902394d5d7226bc516a68 which blocks all releases.
