I also think that it would be a better idea to restart from a clean slate with regard to code and interfaces. That way, we avoid problems with bisecting and merging and people relying on behavior and interfaces that are not likely going to stay the same.

So my vote is on reverting the commit and reopening the original issue. As a note aside: it does not make sense in my opinion to add a revert to an existing Rietveld review as it makes tracking any incremental improvements later harder.

A trivial revert should not need any testing (after all, stuff worked before), a revert with merge conflicts (or just to be sure) should likely have a separate Rietveld review, just to get some testing.
