Just to be clear, comment 33 reveals the workaround
\override Staff.OttavaBracket.Y-offset =
#ly:side-position-interface::y-aligned-side
Relative to the current default, this adds a "ly:", which has the effect of
skipping over the unpure-pure-container and making the Y-offset of the
ottava bracket wait until after the Stem directions are chosen.
