The most recent patch comes from the observation that the bug arises from
the necessity of a distinction between cross-staff grobs (grobs that
somehow intuitively span several staves) and grobs whose placement depends
on these. In the latter case, the grobs should not be marked as
cross-staff, but they should not be pure-relevant either, as examining
their pure heights will cause directions to be calculated for cross-staff
grobs before they should be.
